These photos below I took onsite show “Cool and Cosy” insulation on the back of a 50 watt halogen down light. You can see where the insulation was starting to burn and eventually may have started a fire. Down light fittings need to be clear of insulation behind for heat release. The electronic transformer has melted a bit as well either from being under insulation or too close to the down light itself.The 50 watt halogen lights are way too hot and waste a great deal of power. The 12 volt down lights have a transformer which is another part that can fail and needing an Electrician to change.
The best solution is to replace with LED driverless down lights. They use 1/5 of the power, are brighter, last 15 – 20 years and do not heat up near as much as the halogens pictured. Changing bulbs is becoming a thing of the past.
